Your e-mail and letter d.d. 23/06/2021
Dear-,dear
Thank you for your e-mail and letter dated 23 June 2021, sent to______
and
----, regarding farmhouse and aiiisanal cheeses and dairy products and front-of-
pack nutrition labelling.
Improving consumer info1mation and encouraging healthy diets ai·e important objectives
of the Faim to Fork Strategy. That is why the Commission has announced its ambition to
propose a hannonised mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme at EU level to
empower consumers to make info1med and health-conscious food choices.
The Fa1m to Fork Strategy, however, does not recommend any specific type of front-of
pack nutrition labelling scheme and no choice has been made at this stage. This choice
will be based on the results of an impact assessment, consultation of Member States and
stakeholders, and scientific advice. As a first step, we have published for feedback an
inception impact assessment outlining the different possible options for front-of-pack
nutrition labelling based on the available fonnats aheady developed in the EU. Fmiher
consultations will be organised during the course of this yeai·.
During the recent meeting of the Adviso1y Group on the Food Chain refened to in your
letter, our services have info1med about the Geiman Presidency Conclusions of 15
December 2020 on front-of-pack nutrition labelling, in which the Collllllission is called
to explore, where relevant, the necessity to apply specific conditions to and exemptions
for ce1iain food categories or foodstuffs. As outlined in the inception impact assessment
published end of December 2020 by the Commission, we will explore the possibility to
apply specific conditions to ce1iain categories of food.
Let me reassure you that we are fully awai·e of the specificities of some agricultural food
products, including fa1mhouse and aiiisanal cheeses and daiiy products, and that such
elements will be duly taken into account during the preparation of the Commission
proposal.

healthy diets.
