(my apologies for the long email)
Thank you very much for having taken the time to meet with our UNESDA delegation to allow us to
present our report regarding Nutri-Score. It was a very useful exchange and we were also happy to hear
that you also thought it was useful.
As I said, as UNESDA we are currently not promoting any preferred scheme at EU level. It are still early
days in the process and we look forward in working closely with you on a scheme that will meet the
expectations from consumers and at the same incentivize producers to continue reformulating their
products. I think it was also clear from our presentation, that a key component for us remains the
"compatibility" with existing EU legislation (e.g. the EU Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation).
Attached you will find the full report on Nutri-Score and the presentation we shared with you.
Probably not very surprising, we believe the current Nutri-Scheme for beverages is not optimized the
meet the objectives of a front of pack nutrition labelling scheme. This conclusion is supported by a
detailed scientific review we have done of existing literature (Part 1 of the report), addressing the
various angles of importance to labeling schemes. From our discussion I got the feeling this type of
literature review will be very useful for you and the work the JRC will do (we have also shared our report
with the JR). The report is long, but that's because the second part is a very detailed analysis ofthe
impact of our 3 suggested approaches on beverages currently being sold in France, Spain and Belgium.
As we engage with national public health experts we felt it would be important for them to understand
the actual impact of our changes in their market. Our suggested changes to Nutri-Score, we believe, are
rather limited and do not result in a total overhaul of the scheme; instead keeping as much as possible
the underlying philosophy of the scheme.
Our report has in principle also been submitted to the Nutri-Score International Scientific Committee by
the Belgian health authorities (we are awaiting final confirmation) and then starts our process of
engaging directly with the Committee to defend our suggested changes. We will obviously keep you
updated on these discussions.
Let me conclude by saying that we have some exciting years ahead of us and UNESDA looks forward to
working closely with DG SANTE during this process.
