Payments made to MEPs in expenses

The request was partially successful.

Dear European Parliament,

Under the right of access to documents in the EU treaties, as developed in Regulation 1049/2001, I am requesting documents which contain the following information:

"How much was claimed by UK members of the European Parliament in expenses in 2013?"

UK members of the European parliament being defined as MEP's elected from the UK regions. Expenses being defined as costs claimed for by each member outside of salary.

Please provide a detailed breakdown of what was claimed and how much it cost each time.

Yours faithfully,

NBarbour

Dear Mr Barbour,

Following your request of 15 April under Regulation 1049 for access to information on parliamentary expenses paid to UK Members of the European Parliament in 2013, we are now sending you the following links:

- Statute for Members, or rules governing the mandate for Members of the European Parliament, which entered into force on the first day of the 7th parliamentary term beginning in 2009:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexU...

According to these rules, all Members of the House are entitled to the same salary, allowances and pension rights, independently of their nationality. Major differences in expenditure per MEP result essentially from travel expenses, due to the calculation on the basis of distance between residence of MEPs and the official meeting places of the European Parliament.

- At its meeting of 28 February 2008, the EP Bureau decided to publish information on the different allowances to which all MEPs are entitled on the EP website, following best practice requirements in national parliaments. You can find details and amounts here (scroll down to MEP's allowances) : http://www.europarl.europa.eu/aboutparli...

Individual Members may, of course, decide whether they want to disclose more information on their allowances than is required by Parliament's rules, please visit their personal websites for more information: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/se...

An example is MEP Catherine Bearder's accounts for 2013: http://bearder.eu/en/page/catherine-s-ac...

Please also consult recent information about MEPs' "pay and perks" on the website of the UK EP info office: http://www.europarl.org.uk/en/media/euro...

If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,
