President David Maria Sassoli
European Parliament
Rue Wiertz 60
1047 Brussels
Belgium
Dear President Sassoli,
Thank you for your time last week. I real y enjoyed our conversation and the chance to
connect with you once again.
I agree that the acceleration in the adoption of digital tools, catalyzed by the pandemic, wil
teach us many valuable lessons about how the Internet can support both citizens and
companies alike. This change in behavior wil also require everyone - institutions, companies,
civil society - to come together and discuss how the Internet can be most helpful for society.
We would be glad to participate in such discussions and contribute constructively wherever
we can.
On the topic of
disinformation, we are working closely with both European Commission Vice
President Jourova and national authorities to promote authoritative content and tackle
harmful disinformation online. We’re committed to the EU Code of Practice and to our
cooperation with the Commission to find new and creative ways to continue the fight against
disinformation.
We also discussed the potential for the
digital sector to serve as one of the main pillars for
EU economic growth. We very much believe in that opportunity. As I mentioned during our
cal , we are already working on projects to support smal and medium businesses to leverage
digital opportunities in recovering from the crisis. As an example, we recently launched Grow
Greece with Google, an initiative to train 3,000 job seekers and support Greek tourism
companies in harnessing digital opportunities to grow. This is on top of our efforts to train
5,500 SMBs in Greece since the start of the pandemic. We are looking to replicate these
activities in other European member states.
Last week, we also announced a strategic partnership between Telefonica and Google Cloud
(that fol owed a partnership between TIM and Google Cloud in Italy) to launch a new cloud
region in Spain and help Spanish businesses of al sizes to find new ways to innovate and
contribute to the country’s economic recovery.
Last but not least, I look forward to remaining in touch on the European Parliament’s initiatives
to ensure universal access to the web. I agree that this is a fundamental issue and I would only
add that we would hope that access to the Internet could be paired with robust digital
education to ensure that citizens know how to access it in a safe and positive way.
I very much look forward to our next conversation after the summer break. My team in
Brussels and Rome remain at your disposal for any further questions or needs.
Sincerely,
Sundar Pichai
CEO, Google and Alphabet
