Dear Mr Tsigarides,
The Citizens’ Enquiries Unit of the European Parliament has been asked to
reply to your request for information concerning the International
Monetary Fund (IMF).
We would inform you that the IMF is a non-EU institution, an organisation
of 189 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure
financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high
employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the
world.
The fund was created in 1945 and is governed by, and accountable to, the
189 countries that make up its near-global membership.
Further information is available on the IMF website at:
[1]http://www.imf.org/external/ and if you have more questions with regard
to the organisation itself you may address them directly.
The following briefings [2]The International Monetary Fund (IMF) -
Rebalancing global economic weights, published by the European
Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), and [3]The International Monetary
Fund, the World Trade Organization and international trade, published by
the Directorate General for External Policies, give, inter alia, an
overview of the IMF and an insight into its cooperation with the European
Union.
We thank you contacting the European Parliament.
Yours sincerely,
Citizens' Enquiries Unit
